Thanks Gerard, but you missed the voting period by a day (not that the count really mattered as it turns out). Check out the result: http://jkputnamphotography.com/2012/03/05/and-the-winner-is/

I would totally say Alaska again, since you loved it so much, but if you want to switch it up, I would say:

1) Greenland- sheer-sided fjords, calving glaciers, and the northern hemisphere's largest ice sheet, and c'mon...polar bears!

2) Borneo- You would most definitely be experiencing something much different here! Borneo's highest point is Mount Kinabalu, the caves (Clearwater Cave,) and cute orangutans! Just be sure to pack your bug spray!

Your strong sense of conviction shows through your photos, both extremely admirable. Good luck with Tanzania. It will be awesome. I went overland all the way to lake Tanganyika. What a country!

I agree with steelopus John. Hold any of the photos that are meaningful to you. Release the ones that are less important so you can get your name out there. Have you tried contacting Getty directly to obtain a contract with them? How are you currently marketing your work? Good luck - your work is fabulous and I may be able to help you with the marketing? Debby (Malik) Fasino.

I would retain the right to print and sell the images myself, but I wouldn't be able to sell them to a publishing company for example for them to print in a book. Getty is not as cold-hearted as I'd like the villain in this story to be... but overall you are right, it's not worth it.

Right on.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is one thing you neglected to mention that I think plays an important part in this process: once the images are licensed to Getty for stock usage, you have essentially transferred your ownership/copyright of those images to them. It's like a band recording an album and then the label owning the copyright and publishing rights as well as the master tapes. You're left with nothing but a few bucks in your pocket, while Getty could potentially earn an unlimited amount of profit off your image and your hard work and talent.

I think I'd almost always lean towards retaining ownership of my art and finding private buyers if I felt the need to turn that art into profit.

If you already feel that way, don't give them up. Especially the personal ones. I'm not one to talk, I have played lots of shows for less than I should have. But I also base what I ask in compensation on who asking me to play. I charge double for christmas music because I hate it. Also, the one of the ram (or whatever it is, I'm no marine biologist) is amazing. Plus, cameras, lenses, computers, time. But if you give them 2.5 shots a year that covers your pro flickr account.
